As for listening, I love heavy grooves, but I also love music with a huge sound and epic quality, which could be anything from a John Williams film score to Ella Fitzgerald singing with a bombastic big band, to massive EDM and other electronic tracks—I think they have more in common aurally than most might realize.

As you may already know, the use of music and lyrics in karaoke is another mechanical use that can be another source of songwriter royalties. From her 1997 live album, right before she launches into “Tyrone”, Erykah speaks to my artistic heart. It took me a long time to admit that I am an artist. The word has a bit of stigma attached to it, usually that artists are needy, too sensitive, too fragile. But I believe we’re all artists in some capacity, and it’s important to embrace it. Create clearly labelled folders for the samples that you use or think you might use soon. You can categorize your samples in broad terms, for example, as acoustic drums, drum machine, synth, vocals, or by the name of the sample pack they came from. Then, from there, you can categorize them by type, such as one shots, loops, ambience, pads. Organizing your folders so you can find the right sound a lot quicker is optimal for fast-paced writing sessions, bigger and complicated projects, or time-sensitive work with approaching deadlines.
